Clos du Val
John Goelet, a descendant of Bordeaux's famed wine merchant, Barton & Guestier, had a vision of producing Cabernet Sauvignon that would rival the world's best. French trained winemaker Bernard Portet was selected to lead the search for a property capable of producing Bordeaux-style wines of the highest quality and character. Bernard visited five continents in search of the best vineyard site and ultimately selected the renowned Stags Leap District in Napa Valley, where Clos du Val was founded in 1972.
Our inaugural wine, the 1972 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon, was part of the group that topped French wines in the legendary 1976 Judgement of Paris blind tasting. Ten years later, our Cabernet Sauvignon took first place in the Judgement of Paris rematch.
Clos du Val currently farms two estate vineyards in the Stags Leap District and Yountville appellations. Celebrating our 50th anniversary in 2022, we remain inspired by our original mission: to craft the best Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines in the world.
